Apple’s CEO John Ternus is a huge car guy, and he owns a rare 2019 Porsche 935.
While this is a modern car, it is actually inspired by an iconic Le Mans racer, which makes it a track-friendly car.
And Ternus is reportedly a track day guy as well.
And he’s apparently very good.
This 935 is actually a modern car
This vehicle draws inspiration from the original 1970s Le Mans racer nicknamed ‘Moby Dick.’
But, once you look underneath the vintage-inspired livery and bodywork, you’ll find the underpinnings of a Porsche 911 GT2 RS platform.
Built from carbon fiber, it also features a massive rear wing, an extended tail, and a 3.8-liter flat-six engine producing 700 horsepower.
Only 77 were built, with an original price tag of around $800,000, even though the current market value is well north of that, closer to $1 million.
In theory, this car is a track beast.
But in practice, because it’s so rare and valuable, most owners just store it in a garage waiting to flip it.
Well, Apple’s CEO John Ternus doesn’t.
John Ternus is a fast driver
Ternus has reportedly set a lap time of under 1 minute and 40 seconds at California’s WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.
A sub-1:40 lap time at Raceway Laguna Seca – a 2.237-mile, 11-turn circuit – is extremely fast for an amateur driver.
To put it in context, a sub-1:40 time comfortably matches or exceeds the lap times that top automotive testers achieve when testing high-end road cars like a BMW M4 or Nissan GT-R at the same track.
Auto reviewers aren’t as fast as professional race drivers – not even close – but they still have significant track experience and some training.
In basketball terms, it’s like comparing a top-tier college player to an NBA star.
In the hands of a professional driver running on warm slick tires, the modern Porsche 935 is capable of lapping Laguna Seca in the 1:27 to 1:30 range.
But that’s obviously not an apples-to-apples comparison – see what we did there? – so kudos to John Ternus.
