Just in time for get-fit January, Apple is set to be releasing a major tech update to the Health app, boasting four upgrades that will increase our everyday well-being.

At the moment, the Health app on an iPhone is more or less a glorified step counter.

That is, unless you have a Smart Watch, where you might be slightly obsessed with checking your heart rate, like the rest of us.

But as more people stick to New Year’s resolutions by cutting down calories, hitting the step machine, or simply getting out of the house for fresh air, Apple is dropping four major upgrades to the Health app for our benefit.

The four major upgrades coming to the Apple Health app

Food tracker

One of the biggest elements to our health that often goes unchecked is the food intake.

But with the latest iOS update, reports suggest that the new Health app refresh will include a food tracking metric.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman claimed that the Health app will soon allow you to build on the current data entries for carbs and caffeine intake, allowing you to measure eating and drinking habits and calories more precisely.

“Food tracking will be a particularly big part of the revamped app,” he said.

“Going big on food tracking would mean challenging services such as MyFitnessPal and, to some extent, weight-management apps like Noom.

Health+ videos

The Bloomberg report also reveals that, in a similar vein to the Fitness+ app, the Health app will be getting videos from experts partnered with Apple.

This is set to include sleep experts, nutritionists, mental health experts, physical therapists, and cardiologists, who will go all Peloton on you.

AI virtual assistant

Alongside your new health regime, a new AI agent is supposedly set to guide you and help organize your goals.

This goes hand-in-hand with the new deal for Apple to integrate Google Gemini to engulf Siri, which will likely be tuned to this new wellbeing strategy.

New app design

All of this means that Apple is rejigging how the Health app looks, making it easier to digest your information. Typical charts like the Activity Rings, heart rate monitors, and step counters will all remain at the forefront.

However, it’s likely to look similar to the Fitness UI – that is, unless the predecessor to Alan Dye fancies stamping their authority on this front, following the Head of UI Design’s departure to Meta.

Health App refresh signifies iOS 26.4’s intent on enhancing Apple AI capabilities

The new refresh is reportedly planned for the iOS 26.4 update, which will be entering its beta next month.

With Gemini now at the helm for Apple Intelligence as its AI overlord, the fabled virtual assistant will add its expertise to more areas of your tech experience than ever before.

Especially when it comes to CarPlay.

With Apple clearly shifting focus from its hardware releases to improving its software in 2026, this signifies a clear intent that iOS 26 will be a huge force this year.
