For many, muscle cars are the epitome of car history, with one Plymouth Barracuda proving that time is no match for great engineering.

This 1965 model in particular is owned by one passionate Arizona-based gearhead, who still drives the car today.

Of course, over the years, upgrades have had to be made to bring the car up to scratch and into the 21st century.

However, the real shock about the Plymouth relic is the purchase price, which was less than $2,000.

The Plymouth Barracuda Formula S: what you need to know

Cast your mind all the way back to the 1960s, when the Plymouth Barracuda first reared its hood.

The first generation of the Plymouth Barracuda was offered with a Valiant option with a base engine consisting of a 225ci, with a subsequent choice of a 273ci V8 also available.

However, things changed a year later in 1965 when the Formula S package was introduced to the Plymouth Barracuda.

The Formula S package came complete with a new and improved suspension, a tachometer, and the 273ci V8, which was also known as the ‘Commando V8’.

One car fan got his hands on a Formula S, and decided to show Automotive AZ Rancher around the timeless pony car.

The Formula S was bought in the 80s with a smaller price tag than a golf cart

The proud Plymouth Barracuda Formula S owner, Steve, had kept the car in immaculate condition and had only replaced parts that were in need of some TLC to keep the car ticking over.

In fact, even after some elements were repaired and the engine rebuilt by a high school repair shop, the new motor had just 2,400 miles on it, years later.

He also replaced the radio, which he regretted, as the original couldn’t be salvaged when it packed up, alongside adding an electric distributor to the muscle car.

The most surprising feature, though, may be the purchase price.

The Formula S was originally purchased for just $1,400 in 1986.

One shocking factor is how much the exhaust system cost him to be replaced, with a $1,500 bill sent in the driver’s direction in 2010.

It’s clear to see that the muscle car has been well looked after over the last four decades, but we should note that the original racing stripes are no longer visible.

Part of the great condition of the Plymouth may be down to the weather it has been subject to in California and Arizona, with little to no rust on the hood at all.

Our favorite part of the whole pony car story, though, is the fact that Lulu the dog approves of every inch of the Plymouth Barracuda.
