A historic piece of automotive history is currently for sale, in the form of one of the first Pontiac GTO muscle cars ever built – but there is a catch.
This epic muscle car has surfaced on eBay, and it is a 1964 GTO, one of the first to ever leave the Pontiac factory.
When it was first built, the GTO wasn’t its own model, but it was a Pontiac Le Mans package, and that is exactly what we have with this example.
The big downside, as pictures reveal, is that this GTO has seen better days.

Outside, the bodywork has suffered from years of inactivity, with the paintwork badly faded.
While little information was provided by the seller, the photos suggest it has been in storage for some time.
Despite the apparent condition, the owner says the frame is ‘perfect’ and that the body has ‘very little rot.’
On first glance, it does appear to have survived reasonably well.

While it’s missing some parts, many of them are stored in boxes that will come with the car.
Under the hood, it has a 389ci V8 and an automatic transmission.
The right project for the right person
Despite clearly needing a lot of work, this muscle car could present a perfect project for the right person.
If you are looking to restore a real American icon, then what better place to start than with an early Pontiac GTO?
The seller also said that the car was part of his brother’s estate.
The car does not come with any documentation.
At the time of writing, the seller is aiming for $7,000 for the muscle car.

That could be a tall order, but as it has no reserve, it could go for less than that.
In the first year of being on sale, Pontiac sold nearly 32,500 of the muscle cars.
But as a very early example, this particular GTO really does deserve to live on for years to come.

History of the Pontiac GTO
1964: The GTO debuts as an option package for the Pontiac LeMans, widely credited with launching the American muscle car era.
1966: Gaining popularity, the GTO becomes a standalone model series and achieves the highest sales figures of its production run.
1969: To combat declining sales, Pontiac introduces ‘The Judge’, a bold trim package featuring a rear spoiler and vibrant decals.
1970: GM lifts its internal engine displacement ban, allowing the GTO to offer a massive 455 cubic-inch V8 engine for the first time.
1974: Marking the end of the classic era, the GTO becomes an option on the compact Ventura platform before being discontinued.
2004: The nameplate is revived after a 30-year hiatus as a modern performance coupe based on the Holden Monaro, ending in 2006.
