He’s best-known for Batman movies and a Super Bowl ad, but Hollywood superstar Ben Affleck has a new role as he built a 16-person AI startup in his spare time that he just sold to Netflix for as much as $600,000,000.
It sounds like the plot of a tech thriller, but this one is reportedly very real, with the actor and director pulling off one of the wildest side hustles we’ve seen in years.
While most people knew him for blockbuster movies and red carpet appearances, Affleck was apparently also busy building a tiny AI company focused on the way films are shot.
And now that startup, called InterPositive, has reportedly been snapped up by Netflix in a deal that could reach a worth-the-hard-work $600 million.

Ben Affleck quietly built a 16-person AI startup in his spare time
Of all the people you think would be making waves in the tech space, king of the exasperation meme and movie star Ben Affleck is the last person you would expect.
But he just sold his AI start-up, InterPositive, to Netflix for $600,000,000, and boy, is that a lot of zeroes.

What makes this story even more jaw-dropping is just how small the company was.
According to reports, InterPositive had only around 16 employees, which is tiny for a company tied to a deal worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
But this was not some generic AI outfit trying to churn out entire movies with a prompt.

The company’s tech was reportedly designed to understand the grammar of filmmaking itself, learning facets including framing, focal length, camera movement, and shot composition so software could work more intelligently with footage in post-production.
Affleck was even named as an inventor on a patent linked to the company, which makes this feel a lot more hands-on than your typical celebrity-backed tech venture.
Instead of just lending his name, he seems to have been deeply involved in building something tailored specifically for directors and editors.
Surprising if not only because Affleck was once AI’s biggest critic.

Netflix coughed up $600,000,000 for the celebrity tech
Netflix reportedly saw huge potential in that idea and moved to acquire the company in a deal that could total as much as $600 million.
For a streamer producing enormous amounts of content every year, technology that can speed up and sharpen post-production could be incredibly valuable.
There is also a delicious twist here: Affleck had previously criticized Netflix’s filmmaking approach, yet now he has reportedly sold the company a tool that could become part of its production future.

So while fans were watching Ben Affleck be Batman and become a meme, he may also have been quietly helping reinvent how movies are made.
It’s a smart move for someone in the business to get ahead of and in control of AI before it takes over the movie industry in the wrong ways.
Not bad for a side hustle.
