Could the car world be about to be introduced to a new, hybrid Ford Mustang?

Well, apparently that is the case – because reports have just surfaced of an electrified model.

The report suggests that Ford has already began testing a new, hybrid Ford Mustang.

This development marks the clearest indication yet that the brand’s flagship sports car is going hybrid.

Hybrid Ford Mustang is on the horizon

In case you think you mis-read the headline, we can confirm that you did not.

The iconic, legendary Mustang could be about to receive hybrid power.

Long defined by the power and rumble of the V8, it now appears that the future is coming for the car.

The report in question comes from Ford Authority, and it makes for interesting reading.

It suggested that the brand already has a hybrid Mustang currently in testing.

The report further suggests that the program is internally referred to as, ‘S650E’.

According to Ford Authority, test prototypes are already in the Technology Prove-Out stage.

This means that mule models are currently being tested for electrification.

Should the news come as a surprise?

In all fairness, news of a hybrid Mustang shouldn’t actually be all that shocking.

Ford CEO Jim Farley has led the charge for the legendary brand to consider an electric future.

The CEO is clear that the brand does not have a future if it cannot compete with China’s EVs.

Last year, Farley made an equally interesting revelation.

He admitted that Ford Performance has been testing hybrid powertrains for its cars.

“We really do believe partial electric powertrains work well for performance drivers,” the CEO told Autocar.

Ford has previously confirmed plans for all of its models to go hybrid by 2030.

If the reports are true, then a hybrid Mustang could be here much sooner than you think.

It could even come as part of the S650’s cycle refresh, which would be around the middle of next year.

Such a move would make sense, because it would keep the brand well in line with its 2030 goal.

It would also allow the Mustang to remain competitive in an ever-growing hybrid market.
