Over his movie career, John Candy shared the big screen with a lot of iconic cars.
Whether you know him best from Cool Runnings (1993) or Home Alone (1990) or Uncle Buck (1989), chances are you’re familiar with the late John Candy.
A new documentary about the actor John Candy: I Like Me is coming to Amazon Prime Video next month.
And even at the premiere, there was a nod to one of Candy’s special movie cars.

The many movie cars of John Candy
When director Colin Hanks and producer Ryan Reynolds arrived at the premiere of their John Candy documentary, they did so in style.
The two arrived at the Toronto International Film Festival in a smoking replica of the Chrysler convertible from Planes, Trains, and Automobiles (1987).
It was a fitting tribute to a comedy legend.
Candy passed away at the age of 43 back in 1994, leaving behind a rich catalogue of family favorite movies.
There were a lot of laughs along the way, but there were also a lot of memorable vehicles.
You’d certainly expect that from Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, but that’s not the only one to feature an iconic set of wheels.

In the 1987 movie, Candy and Steve Martin do a cross-country trip to get back to Chicago for Thanksgiving – by plane, train, and automobile as the title suggests.
One such car that carries them along the way is the Grand Detroit Farm and Country convertible.
To say that the car gets put through its paces would be an understatement.
Let’s just say there’s a reason it arrived smoking to the documentary premiere – it was a fitting tribute to the film.
In The Great Outdoors (1988), Candy’s character drives a Jeep Grand Wagoneer.

The car is meant to stand in stark contrast to the S-Class driven by his brother-in-law, played by Dan Aykroyd.
The Wagoneer looks the part as an outdoorsy car that you’d go camping in, but it largely plays second fiddle in the movie to Candy and Aykroyd’s feud.
A very sleek 1973 Cadillac Eldorado appeared in Who’s Harry Crumb? (1989)
Candy played a bumbling private investigator who is on a mission to find a kidnapping victim.
Whilst he’s a clumsy oaf at times, his car was stunningly cool.
And who could forget Candy’s role as the affable Uncle Buck?
The 1977 Mercury Marquis Brougham fits the character of Uncle Buck well – it’s a little rough around the edges, but it’s doing its best.

These iconic cars may not have generated the laughs that their driver did, but they still had screen presence in their own special way.
Other iconic cars from movies we can’t get enough of
Oftentimes, cars have just as much screen presence as the humans driving them.
Whether it’s the pink EV Barbie speeds around in, or the DeLorean itself, there are a lot of movie cars to love out there.
Then there’s the legendary Ferrari that appeared in National Lampoon’s Vacation (1983).
Incidentally, Candy appeared in that film too – but he certainly wasn’t the one driving the red Ferrari down the highway.
That would have made for a much different movie.
John Candy: I Like Me comes to Amazon Prime Video on October 10.
