Collecting license plates is a big business in Australia, and recently a very special and rare license plate was sold for around $1.7 million.
It’s a huge amount to spend just a number plate.

That said, this is no ordinary number plate we are talking about.
This particular plate is registered in the state of Victoria and is special because it is a heritage plate.
The story of this million-dollar number plate is covered on Instagram by an account called heritageplates.
Rare license plate sold for $1,7 million
It has the number ’20’ on it and is one of only 90 two-digit heritage plates in the state.
Even more special, it is one of only nine round-number plates, which collectors really like.
But this is not the first time we have seen a number plate selling for such an insane amount.
Earlier, we saw a rare car number plate selling for a staggering $9.5 million at a charity auction.
While this spending would be way too much for most, it’s a way for the very wealthy to stand out of the crowd.
Rare license plates are investments for wealthy
Even more interestingly, the number plate business means big money around the world.
The value of these rare number plates only increases with time, making profits for the owner.
And it’s not just in Australia, the demand for rare number plates is high around the world.
It’s interesting to see that – in a world where digital number plates are actually becoming a thing – people are still spending millions on the physical ones.
The car featuring this number plate is a Mercedes-Benz C200, which costs around $45,000 in the USA.
This means the owner has spent roughly 37 times more on the number plate than the actual value of the car.
Isn’t that surprising?
But again, while many people find it absurd to spend so much on license plates, for the rich, it’s a way to show off their wealth and status.
