North Carolina added 25 Ford Mustang GTs to its cop car lineup

American cops driving American cars are quite common, but getting 25 Ford Mustang GT units — which the North Carolina State Highway Patrol just did — is an occurrence that stands out.

You see, Mustangs aren’t exactly the types of cars curated to become police cars, but here we are.

What’s more, these new GT additions aren’t the base four-cylinder EcoBoost trims either.

North Carolina State Highway Patrol gets 25 Ford Mustang GT cop cars

Cops in the State Highway Patrol will now drive one of the most unusual cop cars that send off 486 horsepower.

While it seems like a remarkable acquisition, it’s not the first time North Carolina favored a Mustang over other patrol cars.

The state’s police department had several Mustang SSPs in its fleet, back in the 80s and early 90s.

However, these State Trooper cars rely on the immense prowess of a Mustang GT, and it mostly comes out of the latest 5.0-liter V8 engine.

The new cop cars also house Ford’s upgraded GT package, which tunes up the hardware for more performance.

If that’s what it takes to scare the unlawful, then it’s certainly a worthy move.

Highway Patrol departments — or the local police force, for that matter — adding performance cars to their fleets is now an everyday thing.

For instance, California Police recently added 20 new Teslas as part of its all-electric fleet.

Miami Beach Police also boasted of a 2012 Rolls-Royce Ghost, which it acquired to serve several different purposes.

Not the SHP’s first Mustang

Anyhow, North Carolina SHP revealed its latest addition via social media posts in April and made sure to remind us all about the old V8 ‘stang models it had before.

These were called the Mustang SSPs, and the SSP moniker used to mean different things.

Ford included the old 5.0-liter V8 with the Special Service Package (SSP). It was an upgrade package curated for cop cars.

These cars were initially called ‘Severe Service Mustangs,’ but later got the SSP rebrand.

All in all, North Carolina SHP’s Ford Mustang GT models are a powerhouse wrapped in silver and black police livery.

If you want to drive one of these, the SHP is looking for drivers.

So it might be worth a shot to finally have your chance at being a part of local law enforcement.
