The Porsche 718 Boxster and Cayman make up a large part of the brand’s range.
Those cars are considered to be more entry-level-focused offerings from the German giants.
The Cayman and 718 Boxster have, like others, been confirmed to have been earmarked for EV conversion.
But now, it appears that Porsche has done a massive 180 – because the 718 Boxster and Cayman will now be getting petrol power.

Porsche hits brakes on going all-in on EVs
Like other major car brands, Porsche has clearly been studying the changes in the global car market.
The German giant appeared to have pushed a lot of its chips in on the EV wave of growth that had swept the car industry in the past few years.
But an overall fall in EV-focused demand has forced manufacturers to shift course once again.
And the continuing trend has forced Porsche into a swift rethink of its overall approach.

During a recent investors’ call, the brand confirmed that its cold feet had translated into a change.
Because the petrol-powered Porsche 718 Boxster and Cayman are staying alive.
To be clear – entry-level variants of these models will still be EV-only units.
But slides shown to investors during the call show that top-level variants will be ICE-powered.

So, what exactly does this mean in practice for fans of the 718 Boxster and Cayman?
Well, it could actually be very exciting news – because the derivatives could be a lot of fun.
More specifically, it means that GT4, Spyder, and RS variants will all get combustion power.
At this point, you might be wondering what engine options could power these variants of the future.

The truth is that that aspect is still unknown – but some form of flat-six engine seems most likely.
It is important to note that Porsche is far from throwing the EV platform in the trash completely.
For one thing, the new Cayenne EV is due to be revealed sometime before the end of 2025.
The brand also continues to work on development of a new EV platform, scheduled to be revealed sometime in the 2030s.
But, for now, it is good news for petrolheads across the world – because the ICE-powered 718 Boxster and Cayman are very much still alive and kicking.
