The 1976 Porsche 911S is a prized piece of automotive history, and is generally a classic that collectors fight over and enthusiasts dream of restoring.

But one example has become famous for all the wrong, and hilarious, reasons.

After being accidentally buried for years by an equipment operator, the battered coupe resurfaced and was sold for just $850 on Bring a Trailer.

Its journey from forgotten wreck to viral sensation is proof that some legends can be found in places we least expect.

This Porsche 911S is ‘air-cooled’

This particular Porsche 911S, described generously as a ‘project,’ was showcased by YouTuber Dennis Collins.

While he isn’t a stranger to rescuing rare and unusual vehicles, this particular find was special even for him.

After all, the car has definitely seen better days, given that it’s lacking a few windows.

He even called the 911 an ‘air-cooled’ vehicle, which is technically correct.

Given that almost everything in the car isn’t working, from the speedometer to the aftermarket CD player, the ‘air-conditioning’ that the car provides might just be its best feature.

The video quickly racked up views as viewers couldn’t help but laugh at the poor Porsche’s predicament.

What an expensive accident

According to Collins, the car’s backstory is almost too strange to believe.

It had reportedly been accidentally buried years ago by a heavy equipment operator, left to sit underground until it was rediscovered.

When unearthed, what remained was little more than a rusted shell: no interior, no glass, and no drivetrain.

Yet, amid the wreckage, the car still carried one priceless detail: an authentic Porsche VIN, the golden ticket that officially confirmed its identity.

Collins decided to list the car on Bring a Trailer, a platform known for selling everything from pristine classics to hopeless cases.

While he expected a little more excitement from bidders, especially after previously selling a rough 911 for around $8,000, this one fetched only $850.

Still, the humor and novelty surrounding the sale arguably made it one of the most entertaining auctions in the site’s history.
