Porsche’s new $600,000 electric speedboat used the powertrain from a Macan EV

This is the Porsche 850 Fantom Air, a speedboat that uses almost exactly the same powertrain as the Porsche Macan EV.

It’s small, fast, and expensive.

You can tell it was built by Porsche because of how quick it is, and because of the Porsche ‘steering wheel’.

But the fact it costs $600,000 is also a big giveaway, isn’t it?

A Porsche Macan for the seas

Manufactured by Porsche in partnership with Frauscher Boats, the 850 Fantom Air is a 28.4-foot (8.67 meter) speedboat, and it certainly looks the part.

The exterior is finished in white, apart from all the elements in nautical-grade teak wood.

Porsche’s influence is clear when you look at the cabin, which boasts a 15-inch infotainment screen and Porsche steering wheel that looks like they both came straight from the interior of a Macan.

What’s really fascinating is that this yacht uses a slightly modified version of the same drivetrain that powers the Porsche Macan EV.

It produces 400kW, equivalent to around 536 horsepower, and gives the boat a cruise speed of 45km/h – or 24 nautical miles/hour.

It’s also worth noting that the boat ‘only’ weighs 2,800kg – or 6,170lbs, which means it is actually lighter than a Cybertruck.

Why so many automakers are making speedboats

Many automakers are now making boats, so this is becoming a bit of a recurring luxury trend.

The Lamborghini 63 is perhaps the most famous boat made by a car company, but we can also count the Shadow 900 and the Stealth Green Edition, both made by Brabus.

Ironically, these boats, while not cheap, are often less expensive than equivalent supercars.

The Porsche boat is a case in point.

It costs $600,000, which is a lot of cash, but these days that’s no longer enough to buy elite supercars.

The reason behind this trend is quite logical.

The same customer who can afford to spend six figures on a car can generally also spend an equivalent sum on a boat.

But this trend is not limited to high-end brands only.

Cupra – for example – also made one.
