If you’ve ever been to Texas, you might have noticed something interesting about speed limit signs.

You might well have noticed the signs come with a red warning border.

Have you ever wondered why Texas has such a unique presentation style?

Well, this is the reason why – and it is more interesting than you might think.

Texas has some interesting speed signs

Texas is renowned for being a little bit of a unique part of the United States.

It is known for being on the lenient side of the law where drivers are concerned.

But it still has speed limits – and enforces them pretty rigidly.

And it does something to enforce them that no other state does.

The state has speed limit signs that look like any other that you might see in Arkansas or Maine.

But these speed signs have big, thick red borders surrounding the speed limit.

They’re not enforced any more rigidly, and they don’t result in a heavier penalty if they’ve been violated.

So why are they so different – and what exactly do they mean?

It turns out that – much like Papa Roach – these signs are a ‘Last Resort’, so to speak.

According to the Texas Department of Transportation, these red-bordered signs are a third-level escalation.

The first speed limit signs in an area of Texas are your standard black-on-white, ‘REDUCED SPEED AHEAD’ signs.

Following that is a fluorescent yellow sign showing that the speed limit is further down the road.

And that is where our big, red-bordered speed limit signs kick in – if necessary.

If both of those fail to slow drivers, Texas can use the red border signs.

But it can only use the new speed limit sign at the first sight of the new, lower-speed zone.

An example of this might be a highway that ends in a rural surface road.

The red border speed limit sign is sort of like your final warning about what the speed limit actually is.

Of course, it is a little coincidence that these red border signs are put in areas of known speeders.

So don’t be overly surprised if you see the red-and-blue flashing behind you in the Lone Star State.
