When romance called for an electrifying pulse, Ryan and Rebecca Greene plugged their new marriage into a Supercharger and powered through Europe in the comfort of a Tesla Model Y – in one of the most fascinating honeymoons ever.

When you think of ‘honeymoon’ destinations, you think first-class flights to Bora Bora, or taking a boat out, island hopping through Hawaii with Pina Colada-filled coconuts.

Either way, you tend to see newlyweds opt for four-poster beds and memory foam mattresses.

But not Ryan and Rebecca Greene, who have instead opted to spend their first marriage moons under the stars of Europe’s best cities with their toes dangling out the boot of a Tesla Model Y – and they loved every second.

Who needs five-star hotels? Not The Greenes

Despite never camping before, never erecting a tent, never sleeping in a car, and never paddleboarding on an Italian lake in the middle of a thunderstorm, this couple decided to embark on the trip of a lifetime.

Celebrating their honeymoon, The Greenes decided that the seafront views and infinity pools of the Maldives were a can that can be kicked down the road.

Instead, they chose to do something completely different.

Packing their Tesla Model Y frunk with newly-bought and fresh camping gear, and planning a route that would take them through nine countries, the couple spent three weeks chasing the sun with the power of an EV battery.

Speaking to Supercar Blondie, Ryan explained that it was a chance to tick some places off their joint bucket list while taking advantage of the new comforts offered by Tesla.

He said: “We’ve always wanted to camp in our Tesla, and we’ve just never done it. We were looking at different holidays we could go on, and then I just started going down the rabbit hole of thinking, well, what if we just went for it?”

So, how did they settle on where to go?

Well, using one major city as their ‘north star’, they planned a route that would take them out to Germany, down to Italy, and back through France.

“Rebecca had always wanted to go to Berlin as she’d never been. So that was kind of like our north star,” Ryan said.

“We knew that it was going to be something totally unique. We were prepared for ups and downs, but we were just really up for an adventure.”

Tesla Model Y was a camper’s dream, even for first-timers

The beauty of this trip is that the Tesla Model Y is already primed and prepped for such adventures.

Unlike other vehicles that need external roof tents that damage your driving experience, the Model Y and its specially-built camping accessories make everything fit inside the mid-size SUV.

You don’t even need a trailer, like the Cybertruck.

“The Tesla felt like a luxury ‘glamping’ experience,” Rebecca explained.

Their new kit mainly consisted of a Tesla-compatible tent that stretches out over the boot to provide shelter, a MegaMat Auto mattress, and a dodgy mallet.

“In terms of camping, I feel like it was the most comfortable you could be. It’s of course not like being in your own bed, but it wasn’t uncomfortable,” Rebecca added.

Comfort wasn’t hard to come by either, as they claimed that the Camp Mode makes you feel like the Telsa Model Y wants you to live inside it.

“You turn Camp Mode on, set your temperature, set your fan speed, and it’s just like being at home with the central heating on,” Ryan said.

“The Tesla is made for it. It wants you to do that – and it works.”

The best bit of business was the mattress, which was ‘worth its weight in gold’, transforming the trunk into that dream four-poster bed that takes you to the other honeymoon destinations in your dreams.

Of course, it wasn’t without casuality, as every rookie camping experience goes.

They needed the help of a fellow camper and their ‘Thor’s Hammer’ to nail their tent in properly, while a stray peg cracked the glass roof of the Tesla Model Y.

In for a penny, in for many pounds of electricity

Being on the road for three weeks is no easy feat, though, and even with the exemplary range of the Tesla Model Y, The Greenes needed the help of the autopilot to lead it to chargers.

But how much did they spend? And was it even worth cutting costs on a trip like this in comparison to the beaches of Barbados?

The couple only used Tesla Superchargers on their route, and found that the brand-produced boosters were much, much cheaper than standard rates found at campsites.

Especially around mainland Europe, compared to the US.

“We didn’t charge at campsites. We made sure the last Supercharger stop was the closest one to the campsite, topped up to about 60 or 80%, and then that did us for three nights or four nights,” Ryan explained.

“I was blown away by how much cheaper it is to Supercharge in mainland Europe than in the UK. It was a lot cheaper!

“Also, you’ve got the benefit of the car being more efficient in mainland Europe because of the higher temperatures… as soon as we got there, the efficiency of the car just kept going up.”

All in all, the trip cost £946.86 ($1,233), which included the hefty English Channel crossing price of £403 ($525).

They ended up travelling 3,500 miles, and the Tesla Supercharger stations cost £439 ($571), coming to around 16 cents a mile.

Would they do it again?

Well, honeymoons only come along once – hopefully – so they might have to find another special occasion to celebrate, but The Greenes are ‘a thousand percent’ on board the Tesla Camping train.

“You’ve got your car, you can drive wherever you want. Just pick a direction and go,” Ryan added.

But, next time, they’d have an extra companion and a different route.

“Honestly, we’d love to do it all over again, visiting our favourite places and exploring some new places along the way,” Rebecca said.

“We would love to take our dog Alfie the next time too, and I’d like to take a lot less stuff – minimalism is key for me when traveling.

“We’d do it all over again in a heartbeat! Don’t get me wrong, it is tiring being on the road for almost three weeks, but it was 100% worth it!”
