A group of friends did their own Top Gear cheap-car challenge, buying a trio of BMW Tourings that cost just under $700 each and setting off on an epic European road trip.
On YouTube, Brett Barnes posted that the group was headed to Germany’s legendary Nürburgring racetrack in their bargain bangers and wanted to see how far they would get.
That meant brimming the tanks in Cornwall in the UK, where they set off from, and then hoping all the cars made it to Germany still in one piece.
It’s an interesting video that shows cheap and reliable bangers are still out there.

What were the three BMW cars chosen for the trip?
The three cars were BMW Tourings, all of which are station wagons, so they were relatively similar.
But the cars had different engines, so it was also a test of which one had the best MPG.
Ultimately, they were hoping to make it to the Nürburgring on just a single tank of fuel.
In the end, the BMWs did make it to the circuit, and all three did it on a single tank.

Making it more impressive was that they then decided to visit the Spa racetrack in Belgium.
Each car also made it to the villa they were staying in during the road trip.
The BMWs were the perfect advert for cheap cars
As the video progressed, the three cars kept on going, and there had been no issues up to that point.
While the track was shut due to snow, the guys managed to check out the museum at the circuit.
What the trip was showing was that cheap cars that work are still available.
Car prices in general have increased a lot over recent years, even second-hand cars.
But with each car costing just $667, the group of guys seemed to have done a very good job.
At the end of the road trip, all three cars were still running, and there had been no problems at all.
