It turns out that only two places on Earth allow you to drive flat out.
One of them is a place that you can probably guess quite easily.
The other? Probably not anywhere near as obvious.
But the US state of Nevada briefly joined these two places.

Nevada once allowed drivers to go flat out
Speed limits have existed for pretty much as long as the entire car industry.
The US, in particular, has had speed limits in place since as early as 1901.
The state of Connecticut was the first to set such statutes in place.
Back then, the new law set a speed limit of 12mph in urban areas and 15mph in rural parts of the state.
Of course, the car industry has dramatically grown and evolved since then.
Some supercars are capable of hitting speeds north of 260mph these days.
Of course, safely policing the speed of cars on the roads is extremely important.

Recently, however, one US state was extremely liberal.
And that state was, believe it or not, Nevada.
Up until fairly recently, some areas of the Silver State had no speed limits at all.
The National Maximum Speed Law was introduced by the Nixon Administration in January of 1974.
Nevada was the last state to implement the now-famous 55mph speed limit.
That law was eventually repealed in 1995, allowing individual states to set their own speed limits.
Despite now regulating how fast drivers can travel, it’s a place that still appreciates speed, as it has highway speed limits of 80mph – among the highest in the US.
The two places that allow drivers to pin it
Outside of the US, though, some countries tackle speed a little differently.
In fact, there are two regions that have no speed limits at all.
As we mentioned, you can probably pretty easily guess the first one.
And that place, of course, is the Autobahn in Germany.
We should point out that not all of the Autobahn is unlimited.
But it does have stretches of highway that allow you to pin it as hard as you want.

So, which is the longest unrestricted section of the Autobahn?
That would be the 93-mile stretch between Berlin and Hamburg.
It is the single-longest unrestricted stretch of highway anywhere in Germany.
Some have reported seeing cars go as fast as 250mph.
But where is the other region with unrestricted speeds?
That’s a place called the Isle of Man.
In case you’ve never heard of it, the Isle of Man is a literal island.
The Isle of Man is found in the Irish Sea, and is almost perfectly equidistant between Ireland and Great Britain.

You might know the Isle of Man for the legendary TT motorcycle competition held there for two weeks every year.
But what you might not know is that the island actually has stretches of unrestricted roads.
About 30 percent of its road system has no speed limit at all.
In fairness, an island that hosts the world’s most dangerous motorcycle race sort of gets a pass for that.
So there you have it – the two places on Earth that let you, sort of, drive flat out!
