Lamborghini is teasing its first hybrid Aventador.

CEO Stephan Winkelmann says the plug-in hybrid Aventador will be officially launched by March next year.

“The first hybrid car will be the follow to the Aventador, which will have a completely new V12 engine,” he told ABC News.

He said Lamborghini already had close to 3,000 preorders for the car even though they hadn’t yet revealed what it would look like.

Lamborghini’s chief technical officer Rouven Mohr dispelled any fears surrounding the move to a hybrid powertrain, saying it would have “[more] power, more revs, more sound”.

“It will be incredible,” he told Auto Express.

Mohr said the move to a hybrid powertrain would give drivers more freedom on the road.

“It’s an extremely cool feature if you drive with this emotional high-revving sound, [then arrive at] the village, switch off, then silence,” he said.

Lamborghini has not yet revealed a name or a price for the hybrid Aventador successor.

Hybrid future

Winkelmann says the marque will be the first super sports car brand to have a full hybrid lineup.

It plans to have a hybrid powertrain in all of its cars by 2024.

When it comes to a pure-electric car, Lamborghini says it’s unlikely we will see anything until at least 2028.

Last purely gas-powered Lamborghini

Meanwhile, the off-road Huracan Sterrato will be the marque’s last-ever purely gas-powered model.

The Sterrato was first debuted in a teaser video showing it racing a mountain bike to an Italian villa along gravel tracks.

It was basically a minute straight of the camouflaged off-roader getting sideways and kicking up clouds of gravel dust.

The Sterrato will debut at Art Basel next month in Miami.

After the Sterrato launch, Lamborghini will go full throttle toward electrification.
