Ferrari showcased a sneak peek at its first EV earlier this week, and the company has now revealed the secret meaning behind the ‘Luce’ name, which appears different from stable models like the F8.

It’s been a long time in the works, but Ferrari is taking the plunge into electrification.

Previously, the Italian brand has only ever toyed with hybrid supercars like the new 296 Speciale, but the reluctance to produce an EV is now gone, with the Luce coming later this year.

Shortly after revealing its name and a look at a revolutionary interior, the brand revealed the secret meaning behind its first EV’s name.

What we know about the Ferrari Luce so far

It’s taken some effort for the Marinello factory to make an EV, but last year, CEO Benedetto Vigna revealed that ‘Ferrari needs to be able to give customers a unique driving experience regardless of engine propulsion type.’

Originally known as the ‘Elettrica’ (meaning electric), Ferrari’s first EV was announced this time last year, and the manufacturer has been going about its business in typically shrouded fashion.

With surprise visits from inspirational electric Chinese supercars and reported sightings of the test prototypes, fans have been left with a lot of confusion as to what the electric vehicle will look like.

Will it be a typical flash sports car? Or will it follow the blueprint that Lamborghini once outlined with the Lanzador?

Well, while we haven’t seen the exterior yet, the team has shared a first look at the Luce interior.

Crafted by former Apple designer Jony Ive, the modernization is clear, with tech gadgets and screens taking the brand firmly into the 21st century.

We’ve also seen the chassis and powertrain, indicating a larger model capable of 1,000hp and 330 miles of range.

But the question remains, why is it called the Luce?

Why is it called ‘Luce’

Taking to a blog post, the brand recently revealed that Luce means ‘light’ or ‘illumination’ in Italian.

“It testifies to Ferrari’s determination to go beyond expectations: to imagine the future, and to dare. Because leading means illuminating the path ahead – and Luce embodies that mindset.”

Its cars have all kinds of names derived from the Italian language and influential figures from the company.

Think ‘Enzo’, based on founder Enzo Ferrari, ‘LaFerrari’, which means simply, The Ferrari, and ‘Purosangue’, an amalgamation of pure and blood in Italian.

The Luce will set the bar for all future vehicles from the supercar marque, which are coming thick and fast across the next five years.
