Dubai is home to some of the tallest skyscrapers in the world but this skyscraper that costs $1bn and was set to be tallest structure has had a complete redesign after being abandoned.

The Dubai Creek Tower was set to be taller than even the Burj Khalifa but was abandoned while still in the planning process.

Initially, the tower was set to be completed in 2020, but by early 2019, the work crews had completely abandoned it.

All that was left behind was a big hole in the ground and a lot of empty staging areas, but that all looks set to change.

Dubai is home to some of the tallest skyscrapers and most ornate mansions in the world, like the tallest current skyscraper, the Burj Khalifa.

The Dubai Creek Tower project was launched in 2016 as an initiative to build a luxury skyscraper taller than even the Burj Khalifa.

The skyscraper was meant to be designed by Spanish-Swiss architect Santiago Calatrava and was planned to have 20 floors at the top, a luxury hotel, and even a sky garden.

By early 2019 all construction workers had completely abandoned the area, leaving behind only a big hole and complete desolate staging areas.

The project was set to be completed in 2020, but even before the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, construction had ground to a halt, with only staging areas being built.

In 2024, it was announced that the plans for Dubai Creek Tower were actually being revisited and the areas in the outskirts of community surrounding Dubai Creek Tower were slowly being rebuilt, including residential buildings.

At the moment, Dubai Creek is a tidal waterway serving as a natural harbour for trade, but soon it could become a bustling metropolis with a new extremely tall skyscraper.
